Is Snitch compatible with Windows Vista?
Snitch is compatible with Windows Vista, but because of the new permissions system that will prevent automated deletion unless you specifically enable it, you have to make a few setting changes.
By right-clicking on the Snitch icon and choosing Run As Administrator, deletion will be enabled. You may be able to set this permanently by going into the Right Click -> Properties submenu.

When I run Snitch I get the following error: "Snitch Requires MediaPlayer 6 or above to Continue"
Snitch requires a program called Media Player to be installed for playing of movies and audio files. A version of Media Player comes with Windows (to install use"control panel" \ "add/remove programs") and current version of the program are available for download for free from MicroSoft's web site (http://www.microsoft.com). If you already have the required version installed, just exit all other applications before running Snitch again.

When I click on "Search Now" I get the following error: "Snitch has detected other applications running, continuing in this condition may not yield desirable results"
Some applications use large amounts of memory and other system resources. This may cause some problems - for example, running Snitch whilst running another application may limit the result you can obtain. Snitch is design to run alongside most applications, but it is a good practice to close all other applications before running Snitch.

Why is Snitch not deleting certain items?
Deletion issues have several common causes.
Firsly, due to the new permissions system in Windows Vista, you may need to make a change to allow normal deletion of files. If you right-click on the Snitch icon and choose Run As Administrator then any deletion problems should be resolved. You may be able to set this permanently by going into the Right Click -> Properties submenu.
Another reason that deletion failure usually happens is when another process has locked the files for its own use and the system cannot delete them until the lock is rendered inactive. Perhaps a spyware or virus scanner, or maybe a system process has locked the file. Try shutting down any programs that might have hold of the relevant file. Also close any Windows Explorer windows that are showing the directory as these can also prevent file deletion.
If you still cannot determine what is locking your file(s), another alternative is to visit this site:
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
and download and install the free utility, 'Unlocker'. Use Windows Explorer to find a file that will not delete, then right click and choose the Unlocker option. This will tell you which process has locked the file and allow you to unlock that file, and it will also help you forcibly shut down the process that is locking it.

Why am I not getting the search results I was expecting?
The Preferences window contains many options which control the way the Snitch search algorithms function, and incorrectly setting these preferences can cause incorrect results to be returned. For example, in the Image Preferences, by setting the date range improperly, you may find that no images are returned at all, even though there may be many images on the target drive. When in doubt, restore the default settings.

Why am I having problems viewing video results?
Snitch uses Microsoft Media Player to play back video and audio files. Most versions of Windows provide Media Player as part of the operating system. However, if the installation is damaged, you may download the latest version of Media Player for free from the Microsoft website.
Alternatively, you can download the basic Media Player runtime files from www.microsoft.com. Updating DirectX may also solve some playback issues.
Some formats of video and audio files are not supported natively by Media Player. In these cases, small add-ons (called Codecs) can be downloaded and installed. These will enable Media Player to play back additional file formats.
Proprietary file formats may need their own players, eg. Apple QuickTime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime) and RealMedia (http://www.real.com) players may need to be installed on the system if files of these types require playback.

Why am I finding so many damaged image files in my image results?
When downloading pages from the internet, page downloads can be interrupted for various reasons. This can cause half-downloaded or otherwise damaged images to be present on the hard drive. These images will display as an image with a cross in the center.
Images of the incorrect format or an unknown format will also give the same error.

Why are my internet results not complete?
The default setting for internet results in Preferences makes the search algorithm return only suspicious internet results. For example, those which contain one or more suspicious keywords. Deactivating this option will allow all internet results to be recovered in future searches.
